There are three main MMA glove jobs: training, sparring and competition. Training gloves balance hand mobility and strike-zone padding. Sparring gloves add coverage for controlled partner work. Competition gloves are lower-profile and must be approved by the event or commission.
| Type | Use | Key buying question |
|---|---|---|
| Training glove | Technique, mixed drills and coach-approved striking work | Does the padding and closure match the class? |
| Sparring glove | Controlled partner drills requiring an open hand | Does the gym approve this exact model? |
| Competition glove | Sanctioned bout or competition-style drills | Is the event supplying or approving it? |
How MMA gloves are built
MMA gloves leave the fingers and much of the palm open for gripping. Padding sits over the striking area, while a wrist strap secures the glove. Some models use a closed thumb; others use an open or different thumb design. These differences affect drilling, partner contact and event approval.
Read the documented history of MMA gloves for how this format became standardized, and the MMA glove design guide for the striking and grappling tradeoffs.
MMA training gloves
The Fairtex FGV17 is a current training example with genuine leather, an open palm, closed thumb and reinforced strike-zone padding. The Cleto Reyes Black Mamba is the cowhide, double-closure training route.
Training is still broad. For sustained heavy-bag punching, a closed boxing glove is usually the better default. Use the MMA vs boxing glove guide before asking one open-finger pair to cover every session.
MMA sparring gloves
The Fairtex FGV18 adds knuckle padding for sparring and grappling practice. The YOKKAO Ground Sparring is the alternative open-palm training design with more coverage than a competition glove.
Your gym controls the model, padding and permitted techniques. An extra-padded label does not authorize hard sparring or guarantee injury prevention.
MMA competition gloves
The YOKKAO Ground Pro is sold by YOKKAO as a competition model. That does not make a retail pair legal for a bout. ABC guidance requires professional MMA gloves of at least 4 oz, supplied by the promoter and approved by the commission.
Use the MMA competition glove rules guide for the current approval process. The promotion-issued pro MMA glove guide separates verified event equipment from athlete-name marketing.
How should MMA gloves fit?
- Measure the hand using the exact model's chart.
- Size over wraps if the class uses them.
- Make a fist and open the hand through the drill's range.
- Check that padding stays centered over the knuckles.
- Secure the closure without numbness or sliding.
MMA letter sizes do not transfer reliably between brands. A Fairtex medium is not proof that YOKKAO or Cleto Reyes medium will fit. Use the MMA glove fit and hand-protection guide for numbness, padding-position and condition red flags.
What wraps should you wear under MMA gloves?
Use the wrap setup required by the class. A compact inner glove, short wrap or full competition-style hand wrap changes the space inside the glove. Size over that real setup, not a bare hand, and make sure the finger openings and closure still move as intended.
Are MMA gloves suitable for a heavy bag?
They can appear in light, coach-directed technical drills, but they are not the default for sustained power rounds. An open-finger glove exposes more of the hand and usually carries less strike padding than a closed boxing glove. Use the equipment your coach specifies.
Condition matters too: shifted padding, torn seams or a failing strap disqualify a glove even when its category is correct.
Leather vs synthetic MMA gloves
Fairtex FGV17 and Cleto Black Mamba use genuine leather. Fairtex FGV18 and YOKKAO Ground models use microfiber. Material changes care and feel, but it does not choose the session. The leather versus synthetic MMA glove guide covers the care and construction tradeoffs; padding, fit and model role remain decisive.
Which MMA glove should a beginner buy?
Ask the coach. For an extra-padded MMA sparring class, compare FGV18 and YOKKAO Ground Sparring. For general open-palm training, FGV17 is the simpler value route. For competition-style drills, use Ground Pro only when the coach asks for that format. For a child, follow the separate kids' MMA glove guide; an adult small is not a youth sizing system.

For names, team colors or artwork, read the custom MMA glove limits before changing any training surface or structural part.
When to replace MMA gloves
Replace or retire them from partner work when padding shifts, seams open, the closure fails, a rough edge appears or contamination persists. There is no universal lifespan.

An MMA glove is a system of compromises
Padding supports striking. Open fingers support grappling. The palm has to flex. Finger loops have to hold without cutting. The closure has to stabilize the wrist without blocking posts and grips. More of one feature can reduce another.
That is why “best MMA glove” is incomplete. Best for which phase?
Build the glove setup around the week
- Striking volume: use boxing or Muay Thai gloves for heavy bags and long pad rounds.
- Technical MMA drills: a training model such as the Fairtex FGV17 keeps the hand available for transitions.
- Controlled partner work: use the gym's approved, more padded sparring format.
- Competition: follow the event's supplied or approved equipment process.
Many serious trainees therefore own boxing gloves plus an MMA training or sparring pair. That is not duplication. It keeps each glove inside the job it can do well.
Fit over the real wrap setup
Some MMA gloves allow a compact wrap; others become cramped quickly. Put on the exact wrap or inner glove used in class. Check the finger webs, thumb and palm before making a fist. Then open the hand, grip lightly and post.
Do not use pain as a break-in method. Broad stiffness can settle. Numbness, sharp pressure and a pulling thumb mean the size or model is wrong.
Inspect before partner rounds
Press the padding, check the seams and confirm no hook edge is exposed. Retire a glove from partner work when foam becomes flat or uneven, a loop tears or the closure shifts. A clean glove can still be worn out.
