How to Choose a BJJ Gi: Fit, Weave and Competition Rules - MMA Warehouse

Choose a BJJ gi in this order: fit, intended use, fabric weight, competition rules, then style.

A beautiful gi that pulls across the shoulders will sit in the closet. A lightweight competition gi that misses the current sleeve measurement may not get past inspection. And an “A2” from one brand can fit differently from an A2 in another.

Quick BJJ gi buying guide

Your priority What to look for What to check
First gi Comfortable all-round weave and straightforward fit Brand size chart, exchange terms and academy requirements
Hot training room or travel Lighter jacket and quick-drying pants Fabric details, reinforcement and current stock in your size
Frequent hard rounds Heavier or more reinforced construction Comfort, drying time and whether the extra weight is useful to you
IBJJF competition Current permitted color, fabric and measurements Official rules, event notice and the gi after washing

Start with the brand's size chart

Do not buy from your T-shirt size. Start with barefoot height and current body weight, then use the chart for the exact product.

If height and weight point to different rows, the product-specific chart should explain the next step. In general, height controls sleeve and pant length, while weight helps you judge room through the torso, hips and thighs.

When the gi arrives, try it on before washing or training:

  • raise and rotate both arms
  • close the jacket with normal overlap
  • squat and sit to your heels
  • step, hip-escape and bring a knee toward your chest
  • check that the pants stay secure without cutting into the waist
  • compare the sleeves and pants with any competition measurements that matter to you

If the fit fails, exchange it while it is still clean, tagged and returnable.

Understand gi weave without buying a label

Pearl weave

Pearl weave is common in modern gi jackets because it can balance weight and durability. The GSM number describes fabric mass per square metre, not the complete gi's quality or finished weight.

Gold or heavier weaves

A heavier jacket can feel substantial and may suit daily training, but it takes more room in a bag and may dry more slowly. Heavier is not automatically more durable; panel design, stitching, reinforcement and use still matter.

Ripstop

Ripstop is often used for pants and some lightweight garments. It packs well and dries quickly, but you should verify whether the exact jacket and pants meet the rules of any competition you plan to enter.

Choose by use case

Daily training gi

Prioritize unrestricted movement, a collar you find comfortable and construction that suits your training frequency. Owning two workable gis is often more useful than spending everything on one that cannot dry before the next session.

Lightweight or travel gi

A lighter gi takes less space and can make hot rounds more tolerable. The current Hayabusa Ultra-Light BJJ Gi uses a 350 GSM pearl-weave jacket, while the Fairtex Exosphere publishes a 380 GSM pearl-weave jacket and ripstop pants.

Those numbers help compare fabric, but they do not replace the fit chart or current event rules.

Heavier training gi

If you prefer a more substantial jacket, the current Hayabusa Essential Gold Weave Gi is the heavier route in the live range. Check current size availability before building your decision around it.

Current IBJJF gi requirements

The current IBJJF uniform requirements state that a competition gi should use cotton or cotton-like woven fabric that is not too thick or hard to grip.

For color, the gi must be uniformly white, royal blue or black. The jacket and pants cannot be different colors, and the collar cannot contrast with the jacket.

The current inspection measurements include:

  • the jacket should reach the athlete's thigh
  • sleeves should finish no more than 2 cm from the wrist with the arms extended parallel to the ground
  • pants should finish no more than 2 cm above the ankle bone
  • lapel thickness: 1.3 cm
  • collar width: 5 cm
  • sleeve opening at full extension: 7 cm

Rules can change, and individual events can publish additional instructions. Check the official page and tournament notice again before competition.

If you plan to add logos, read our BJJ gi embroidery and patch guide before sewing anything.

Shrinkage and washing

Do not assume “pre-shrunk” means the dimensions can never change. Follow the care label for the exact gi. Hot water and machine drying can change cotton garments, but using heat as a sizing tool is unpredictable and may affect the jacket, pants and decoration differently.

Buy the fit you need. Do not buy an oversized gi and hope to shrink it into the right competition measurements.

For the full routine, use the BJJ gi washing and care guide.

Current gis to compare

The live BJJ gi collection currently includes Fairtex and Hayabusa models across lighter pearl weaves and a heavier gold-weave option. Availability varies by color and size, so check the product page rather than assuming every A-size is in stock.

Final fit checklist

  • The exact product chart matches your current height and weight.
  • You can move through a full squat and shoulder rotation.
  • The jacket closes and stays comfortable under movement.
  • Sleeves and pants suit your training or competition requirements.
  • The gi meets your academy's color and patch expectations.
  • You have checked the current governing rules for the event.
  • You have not washed or trained in it before making the return decision.

When the size chart gives you two answers

Many buyers sit between rows: the height points to one size while body weight points to another. Do not average the two codes. Identify which part is likely to fail.

If the smaller size threatens sleeve or pant length before washing, sizing down is risky. If the larger size leaves a large torso fold or pants that need the drawstring pulled to its limit, sizing up may create a different problem. Long, heavy and women-specific cuts can solve the mismatch better than changing the whole size.

Send the retailer your height, body weight, chest, waist, hip and inseam measurements when the chart remains unclear. A useful answer should reference the exact model, not only repeat “A2 should work.”

Read the product specification as a system

Jacket GSM, weave, pants fabric and reinforcement work together. The Hayabusa Ultra-Light BJJ Gi and Fairtex Exosphere BJJ Gi sit in the lighter conversation, while the Hayabusa Essential Gold Weave Gi offers a more substantial jacket. That does not make one “better.” It changes heat, packing, drying and scale weight.

Look at pants too. A light jacket with substantial twill pants can weigh and dry differently from a similar-GSM jacket paired with ripstop.

The first-wash rule

Do not wash a new gi until the dry fit and return decision are settled. Put on the undergarments you will train in, tie the pants, close the jacket and perform the full movement check. Photograph the sleeve and pant position if you may need sizing help.

Once you wash it, use the sewn-in care label. Intentional shrinking is a poor sizing method because the sleeves, skirt, pants and collar may not change equally.

Training gi or competition gi?

A first gi should make ordinary classes easier: good movement, realistic laundry and a fit your academy accepts. A competition gi adds another layer of inspection, current rules and weigh-in planning. If you are not registered for an event, do not sacrifice daily fit for a marginal scale advantage you do not yet need.

Frequently asked questions

How should a BJJ gi fit?

It should allow full shoulder, hip and knee movement without excessive loose fabric. For competition, it must also fall inside the governing body's current measurements.

Should I size up for shrinkage?

Use the exact brand chart and care instructions. Do not automatically size up or rely on a hot wash to correct the fit later.

What GSM gi is best?

There is no universal best GSM. Lighter jackets pack and dry more easily. Heavier jackets feel more substantial. Fit, construction and intended use matter more than chasing one number.

What gi colors are legal for IBJJF competition?

The current IBJJF uniform page permits uniform white, royal blue or black gis. Recheck the official page and event notice before competing.

Do I weigh in wearing the gi?

Competition procedures depend on the governing body and event. Check the current event rules rather than using a general buying guide as your weigh-in source.
