Matrix guards have long coverage. Choose the smaller row when it still clears the kneecap and the foot protector reaches far enough. Choose the larger row only when the smaller guard sits short or the straps pinch.

Do they slip?
YOKKAO shin guards like the Matrix or Institution rarely slip due to non-slip interiors, stress-resistant Velcro straps, and dual elastic foot/ankle bands that lock in place during checks or clinches in Muay Thai. The Flames model adds reinforced foot guards for extra stability; however, on larger calves, they may shift if not sized up.
Which is best for a beginner?
For beginners, the YOKKAO Institution with its high triple-layer protection and lightweight microfiber is forgiving for learning checks, while the Matrix offers premium cowhide for those wanting long-term quality without bulk - the Flames adds extra foot reinforcement for knee strikes.
Leather or microfiber - what changes for durability or care?
YOKKAO's Matrix uses cowhide leather that molds with use for a custom feel and natural breathability, requiring conditioning to avoid cracking - lasting 2-4 years with care. Microfiber in Institution/Flames is vegan, easier to clean, and more sweat-resistant for humid gyms, without fading; users note microfiber is lighter and lower-maintenance than leather but may show wear faster on straps - air dry and avoid sun for both.

By far best shin guards I've invested in. Ive been training for 10+ year and definitely recommend these. Im 5'8 , 155lbs, bought a size medium and these fit perfect. To be honest , they are a little uncomfortable and stiff at first (understandable) but once broken in , they are super comfortable. Ive read comments on the padding on the foot being too long but I havent had an issue and I wear a size 9.5US. Im also super happy w quality, definitely a good buy 👌

These YOKKAO Matrix shin guards are solid overall—great padding, secure fit, and they look awesome. However, they definitely run big! I’m 6'1" and always get large-sized gear, but these were huge on me. The length and bulk were more than I expected, so if you're between sizes, consider sizing down.Aside from that, they’re well-made and protective, just be mindful of the sizing if you don’t want them sliding around. A little adjustment in sizing options would make these 5 stars for sure!

Great material. Great padding. Straps cam be a little higher than you need. Order smaller than it specifies, or the strap will dig into the back of your knee when you bend your leg

I've been using these for my first month of muay thai and they have been amazing. Solid grip on the legs, no rubbing, and protect well from hits. Leather feels high quality, soft but sturdy. Highly recommend these guards
These are the best!! I returned my Fairtex shin guards after I used these. I have used RDX and Meister as well.. These offer superior protection and have a sleek design. They are well made in Thailand using high quality leather. Yokkao cost a little more than the the other brands I mentioned, but it is worth it when you can train longer and harder with less injuries.
They fit nicely and feel secure when sparring. I’m 6 ft and 160lbs with skinny legs and went with the weight range on their size chart which worked out fine.
I used to just use top king but figured I would give these a whirl. So far so good, one month in! They are incredibly light and have good padding. I recommend them not for a first timer as they don't offer as much protection for the shins as other shin guards, but someone more intermediate or advanced, esp those trying to toughen their shins. Its not that they dont protect...they do, i just dont think they protect as much as other brands like fairtex or top king.
10/10 recommendation
