Curved or flat/round - what should I choose?
Curved pads “catch” kicks more naturally and are easier on the holder; flat pads are cheaper and give a boxier surface (nice for hands/knees/teeps), while round/donut faces are great for teeps, low kicks, and accuracy work. If you’re unsure, choose curved for all‑round use.
Leather or synthetic - does it matter?
Leather generally lasts longer and ages better; synthetic/microfiber runs lighter, dries faster and is easier to clean - good for long classes or humid gyms. Pick leather for maximum durability, synthetic for lower upkeep and weight.
How heavy should pads be (coach fatigue)?
Standard curved Thai pads are roughly 5.5 - 6lb per pair. “Lightweight” lines shave ~0.2lb per pad so you can hold longer, faster rounds. If you run big classes or long sessions, lighter pads help a lot.
