It does not protect that part of the head. If you go to the product page for this head gear or you look at it in person you will see that there isn't any protection at all in that area back there.

A:
The interior is felt, but is filled with a special foam, avoiding excessive absorption. The preferred manner of cleaning would be to gently scrub with a warm washcloth inside and out.
