What was then a small Pay-Per-View card at the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Connecticut would today earn the title of "superfight" status. Rising light heavyweight and future Hall of Famer, Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell grinded out a decision win (his sixth in the UFC) against Russion kickboxer Amar Suloev. Murilo Bustamante, a ground specialist and one of the founding members of Brazilian Top Team, stopped Dave Menne with a second-round TKO to claim the UFC's middleweight title.
But the story of the night revolved around the main event: Jens "Lil' Evil" Pulver defending his lightweight title against the odds-on favorite, BJ "The Prodigy" Penn. The Hawaiian challenger stormed Pulver early and dominated the first two rounds, nearly finishing the champion with an armbar. Pulver, however, only gained strength at the fight moved into the deep water. Pulver dropped the hammer in the fifth, out-slugging Penn to earn the majority decision and retain his belt.
